Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare explicit self-esteem levels, measured by Rosenberg¡¯s Self-Esteem Scale(RSES), and implicit self-esteem levels, measured by the Implicit Association Test(IAT), between a control group, a major depressive disorder (MDD) group, and a bipolar I disorder (BD) group. Study participants completing the RSES included 113 normal control subjects, 30 patients with MDD in remission, 32 patients with BD in remission. An additional 20 normal control subjects, 20 MDD patients in remission, and 21 BD patients in remission completed the IAT. A series of ANOVAs and post hoc analyses were used to compare self-esteem levels among the groups. Results indicated that the normal control group reported higher explicit self-esteem than both the MDD and BD groups. Implicit self-esteem levels in the BD group were lower than those of the normal control. These results suggest that implicit self-esteem level, less impacted by self-consciousness than explicit one, in the patients with BD in remission may be lower than in control group subjects.
